Over the centuries, the avenue eventually became buried underground. The road consists of a stone-paved walkway in the center, flanked by nearly 1,300 statues. These statues take various forms, including full ram figures, ram heads on lion bodies, and human heads on lion bodies, each with its own symbolic meaning. The Avenue of Sphinxes connects some of the most important archaeological sites in Luxor. The statues were carved from sandstone, and the path stretches for 2,700 meters, linking the Karnak Temple to the Luxor Temple.
